Why track uric acid?
In gout, the goal of uric-acid-lowering medicine (such as allopurinol or febuxostat) is to keep uric acid below a target — usually below 6 mg/dL (about 360 µmol/L), or below 5 mg/dL in more severe gout — so that urate crystals slowly dissolve. Attacks can still happen in the first months of treatment; that does not mean the medicine is failing.
Targets follow the 2016 EULAR and 2020 American College of Rheumatology gout management guidelines. See also: Gout · Gout diet.
This is a self-help tool, not a diagnosis. It helps you keep track and talk to your doctor. If you feel very unwell, have a high fever, chest pain, sudden weakness or vision loss, seek medical care straight away.
